srirangam nel alavu 1

Yesterday, 10 March 2014, was the seventh day of Tirupaliyodai Tirunal at SriRangam temple. At 6.45 p.m. after Choornabhishekam NamPerumal came to Tirukottaram, the temple granary which is situated adjacent to Kamalavalli Thayar sannidhi. The seventh day of every utsavam is dedicated to stock -taking. Paddy is measured in the granary after NamPerumal accompanied by Ubhaya Nachimars stands infront of the granary to witness the process.

Once Nel alavu was  over NamPerumal  who was dressed in a blue silk covered from head to feet with precious gems and jewellery and  Ubhayanachimars in white silk with green zari border started on their sojourn. The  procession moved slowly on the four Utthira Veedhis. Devotees who could hardly glace at His Tirumukhamandalam last evening enjoyed Him and the Ubhaya Nachimars as they strolled with abandon in a relaxed manner. Tommorow is the Big Day and NamPerumal will leave Moolasthanam at 4.15p.m. via Chitra Veedhi to reach Theppakulam asthana mandapam by 5.30p.m. Theppotsavam will take place between 7.30 and 9.00 p.m.

  1. Thanks for the pics coverage videos. A couple of doubts. The granaries or Thiru Kottaram is next to Sengamala nachiyar sannidhi (not Kamalavalli nachiyar as mentioned in the report.). She is considered to be Dhanyalaksmi and Dhanalaksmi presiding over Namperumals Nel kidangugal. I am not sure if any other temple has exclusive Dhanyalaksmi sannidhi.

Second point the kottaram in Sri Rangam is a grand set of five granaries referred to as Anjana petti. Adhi Thirurangam has one granery. Only here you have four and one in ruins I think. Your coverage may kindly include not only pictures of the purappadu but also these granaries. Sengamala thayar sannidhi as well as stills from actual measuring ritual.

In modern distribution economy the function may be jusr another event but in the earlier agrarian times this may have been a very important function.
