March 21st 2016 (Panguni Magham) was Day-5 of Panguni Utthiram celebrations at Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal temple. Perumal with ubhayanachimars and Malayala Nachiyar left in purappadu at 6.00p.m. Perumal wore the pearl Pandian kondai and ubhaya nachimars wore crowns of pearls to match. Malayala Nachiyar wore a long braid with jadai and flowers encircling the rakodi. the meroon jari border was so broad that it covered her entirely.
After making the rounds of Sannidhi Street oonjal took place followed by Tiruaradhanai at the hundred pillar mandapam. Devotees did pradakshinam of Them and watched the proceedings, offering anjali whenever there was a harathi. After theertham, srisathari and prasadam distribution there was padiyetram and the walk back to Tondaradipodi was more relaxed than the previous days and the music played was invigorating. The mukha veena is played during Panguni utsavam as also the nadhaswaram. When ghataharathi is offered for Perumal the silver umbrella is swirled around, and the golden umbrella is swirled during Thayar’s ghataharathi. Once They enter the temple devotees follow Them and once They reach the ‘kanadi-arai mandapam’ They wait at the periphery and slowly move backwards so that devotees enjoy the day’s alankaram and capture it in their mind so that once they go home the picture flashes in their mind and Perumal too reluctantly bids adieu to His bhakthas.
