The Jagannath Temple is located in the coastal town of Puri in the state of Orissa, India. The temple is about 60 kms from Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. It is said that Badrinath originated during Sathya yugam, Dwaraka originated in Dwapara yugam and this great kshetram, Puri originated in Kali yugam. This kshetram is also called as “Purushothama Mukthi Kshetram”. The speciality of this sthalam is that the deities are found in Viruksha (tree) roopam. They are made up of wood but not of any stone. This temple is said to have the largest kitchen (madapalli – place where the food for the Perumal is prepared) in the world and feeds thousands of devotees every day and food for more than 100,000 people on a festival day and for 25,000 on a normal day can be prepared. Because of the temple’s intense religious importance and traditions, entrance is forbidden to non-Hindus.
