Adhyayana Utsavam at Sundapalayam Temple, Coimbatore

ADHYAYANA UTSAVAM will begin on the 26th Dec at Sri Vararaja Swami Temple, Sundapalayam, Coimbatore with Pagal pathu.The Prabandha recitation will be at 4.00.P.M during Pagal pathu.The Prabhandham recitation for RAA PATHU will beat 6.00 P.M from the Vaikunta Ekadsi day. Bhagavadas in and around Coimbaotore are requested to join the ADHYAPAKA Ghosti.  Recently the 1st Pavithrothsavam was performed at Sri Vararaja Swami Temple, Sundapalayam, Coimbatore between 27-11-11 1nd 30-11-2011.

About the temple

Srinivasa Varadaraja Perumal temple in Sundapalayam is situated admist sylvan surrounding with Marudhamalai in the North Gopalapuram alias Sundapalayam 12 km West of Coimbatore, was once known as West Aarainadu. The irrigation channel of Chitrachavadi flowing nearby makes it fertile and lush green with a variety of plants and trees. Nestled in such a backdrop is the Srinivasa Varadaraja Perumal temple called Mela Srirangam by the Vaishnavites here. In the 18th Century, when there was a population exodus from Mysore, a number of Vaishnavites from Thalaikadu resettled themselves in Vadavalli, Coimbatore.

One devotee of a family, it is said, was directed by the Lord in his dream to retrieve the archa-vigrahas of Bhoomadevi, Neeladevi and Srinivasa Varadaraja Perumal in a dilapidated Vishnu temple near Chitrachavadi village and house them in a new temple at a different place. An area of “solanum tervum” (sunda plants) was chosen and it was cleared to construct the temple for the deity. The Vaishnava Acharya, Srimad Periyandavan Swami of Srirangam during his visits to the place, blessed their efforts and the temple was named Srinivasa Varadaraja temple.

Soon, an agraharam came up and brahmins well-versed in pancharatra agama, Nalayira Divyaprabandham and Sanskrit from Mysore, Srirangam and Tiruchi colonised the place to attend to the activities of the temple. The village population of Chitrachavadi also settled in the temple town.

The silver satagopa (called Satari), in Komalavalli Thayar- Aravamuda temple at Kumbakonam eulogised by Nammalvar, was brought in exchange for a golden satagopa, in a procession comprising elephants, horses and camels, all the way from Kumbakonam to the precincts of the temple in 1785.

A beautifully sculpted Rajagopuram greets the visitor at the entrance. Behind the dwajasthambha, Garudalwar faces the main deity (praised also as Aravamudan) Srinivasa Varadarajaperumal with his consorts, Sreedevi on the right and Bhoodevi on the left. In the inner prakara, there are shrines for Komalavalli Thayar, Nigamanthaka Desikan, Vishwaksena, Nammalwar and Ramanuja.

Brahmotsavam is conducted in the month of Purattasi on Mondays in the same way as in Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanam. Vaikunta Ekadasi is celebrated on the lines of Srirangam temple with three maravanais, for Mohini avatar, garuda vahana and sesha vahana. The silver satagopa is used only on these three occasions to bless the devotees.

The utsavar is beautifully decorated during Nandavana Thiruvizha twice annually.

Srirangam Periyandavanswami visited the temple and formulated the procedures of worship and conduct of festivals. The temple was also graced by the preceptors – Sreeranga Satagopa Yateendra Mahadesikan and Sriranga Yateendra Swami with their holy presence.
