The temple, located near Maraimalai nagar in Chennai, was originally popularly known as Sri Varadaraja Swamy temple. In 1848, the archa murthies of Yoga Hayagreevar and Devanathaswamy were brought here from Thiruvahindrapuram near Cuddalore to protect them from alien invasion. So the temple is referred to with all three names of the archa murthies here. The Moolavar is Varadarajaswamy, Utsavar is Devanathaswamy and Sri Yoga Hayagreevar is the main perumal here.
